Vizio and LG LCD TV Repair: LED backlight repair or replacement

If you are having issues with your LG LCD flat screen television then today’s post might be of some help. Note that this may also help fixing Vizio TV models with similar problems. Symptoms include the following:

  • TV has sound but with the either of following problems:
    • Black screen (also known as the infamous Black Screen of Death issue)
    • Dark or very dim screen (i.e., not totally black but you can still make out a bit off the pictures on the display)

Take note that this problem can be caused by more than one issue in your TV and this post only discusses one possible cause and that is faulty LED backlights.

Below are two videos (by the good folks at Tampatec Youtube channel) discussing the troubleshooting and repair processes needed to fix this issue. The first video discusses the diagnostic steps to figure out possible problems with the power board and/or the main logic board. Please do go through this video before attempting to replace your LED backlights.

The second video discusses the steps to the repair itself, including where to get the parts and the tools you need. One essential tool needed for this is the LED backlight tester so be sure to look into one, if you still don’t have it, before proceeding.
