Screen flashing on & off on an LG 49LF5500 LED TV (LED backlights problem fix)

If you have an LG LED TV that is exhibiting problems with the screen wherein it just blinks on and off continuously then you might want to check out today’s video on an LG 49LF5500 LED TV showing a similar symptoms (flashing on and off non-stop). Diagnostics involved the use of an LED backlight tester to confirm that the problem was being caused by bad LED backlights.

The LG 49LF5500 LED TV is a Discontinued Model (Image credit: LG.com)

This LG model is a big 49-inch flat screen that uses LEDs as backlights.

Video also shows the disassembly process so it should be quite helpful to DIY-ers that have not done this sort of thing a lot. Great tips provided in the video on how to properly disassemble so kudos to bigdog8882 of Youtube fr making this very informative video. Watch it below.

Special tools that you may want to have for this repair (aside from the other must-have electronics repair tools you have):

  • LED backlight tester – needed to hone in on which LED strips and individual LED is busted.
  • Some pry tools (for electronics repair) – to safely pry off panel coverings, etc.
  • Cordless screwdriver – not really a necessity but always cool to have.
  • Suction cups to lift the LCD panel off – it is good to invest on this as it helps a lot in safely lifting/carrying the very important LCD panel. If you break or crack it, you’re in big trouble!

Do note that screen issues on an LED/LCD TV may have different causes and weird behavior doesn’t necessarily point to busted LED backlights. You need to systematically perform the diagnostic process to arrive at the most probable cause. If you’re a beginner in electronics repair, I do urge caution.
