Tips on How to Check Bad or Faulty Capacitors on Circuits

Here’s a nifty little video on a very useful aspect of electronics repair by one the most prolific electronics repair channel on Youtube. If you haven’t checked out a video of Tampatec then you qill be in for a nice treat as his videos are very concise and filled with actionable and useful tips on how to tackle any DIY repair challenges facing your everyday TV displays, sound systems and many other ubiquitous devices and gadgets. I even saw a video there on setting up a jump starter system for your car. He also usually throws in a good amount of safety tips in his videos which I really appreciate. Those bits are surely very important to newbies, amateurs or just to any enthusiast. As always, safety first! (See our general safety warning here: https://flatscreentech.com/tv-repair-safety-tips/)

In this video, Paul of Tampatec gives some tips on how to diagnose bad capacitors using two common tools: the ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) digital multimeter and the Fluke multimeter. He provides some information on the difference between the two devices and why he usually just uses the Fluke. The video also contains some nice background lecture on what capacitors are and how they are generally constructed, along with some of the reasons why they go bad. Not bad for a 14-minute video!

One important detail that you will learn in the video is that not all bad capacitors will bulge or pop so having a good multimeter to take the necessary readings is certainly a must if you wish to properly diagnose most bad capacitor problems. If you have other tips, additional info or any factual inaccuracies in this post, please do share them/let me know in the comments section. Thanks!
