Honestly, do we really need more pixels on our TVs? With the current crop of ultra-HD displays available, is there really a need to add more “definition”? Well, some, if not all, of the top electronics manufacturers think so and a few of them have started to get in on it in the past year with announcements and releases that, in most likelihood, do herald of things that are to come.
What is an 8K TV?
Simply put, 8K TVs are flat screen TVs that pack 33 million pixels on it. Compared to the aging 4K screen, it’s packing about 4 times as many pixels (Remember that 4K screens packed 4-times as many pixels as the good ol’ 1080p (HD) screens). That is definitely a significant jump from erstwhile king of TV screen pixel counts and the specs are definitely look exciting. Technically and realistically speaking, and in the right conditions, more pixels mean more image details and hence, we may expect better images.
Should You Buy Now?
But… the ultimate question for those who are keenly watching this new tech is whether you should get in on it now. Samsung is already selling units and is featuring their flag ship model pictured above. I reckon other manufacturers are doing the same so there should be a few options for those shopping around. The problem is that you will probably not be able to maximize the TV’s capability right now due to the lack of 8K content available. The consensus is that it may take a while for content providers to release enough material to enjoy the full pixel-powers of 8K.

Both Forbes and Engadget agree that it might be better to wait it out for the time being until more content-providers get up to speed, literally and figuratively. Firstly, broadband connections need to go broader and next tier 5G connections should help achieve that and help enable providers such as Netflix, Youtube, etc. to provide more pixels in their shows.

If you are the impatient type and want to jump on this new high def experience, worry not as we are assured that current 8K models (like that Samsung pictured above) are compatible with 4k content so technically there should be no reason, apart from the soaring prices expected of newly refreshed techno-gadgetry, for you to stall your purchase. Samsung’s QLED 8K actually got good reviews so why not, right? If money is of no issue and the lack of content is okay with you, then by all means, enjoy your 33 million pixels!
